CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

1.1 Competency

Use basic knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to explain how computers can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence and identify AI applications in everyday life.

1.2 Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter, students should be able to:

1. Define Artificial Intelligence. 2. Explain how AI works. 3. Identify the main characteristics of AI. 4. Differentiate between AI and traditional computer programs. 5. Identify applications of AI in everyday life. 6. State the advantages and limitations of AI. 7. Explain the responsible use of AI.

1.3 Prerequisite Knowledge

Students should already know:

- The meaning of a computer. - The basic functions of a computer. - The meaning of data and information. - Examples of computer applications.

1.4 Real-Life Situation

A student uses a smartphone to search for information. The phone suggests words while the student types. A video application recommends videos based on the student's interests. A translation application changes English sentences into French.

These systems can perform some tasks that normally require human intelligence.

Problem: What technology allows computers to perform such tasks?

Solution: Some of these systems use Artificial Intelligence.

1.5 Meaning of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that enables computer systems to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence.

These tasks include learning, problem-solving, recognizing images, understanding language, and making predictions.

AI systems use data, algorithms, and computing power to produce results.

Examples of AI applications include:

1. Chatbots that answer questions. 2. Facial recognition systems that identify faces. 3. Translation applications that change text from one language to another. 4. Navigation applications that suggest routes. 5. Recommendation systems that suggest videos or music. 6. Medical systems that help doctors examine medical images.

1.6 How Artificial Intelligence Works

Many AI systems follow these basic steps.

Step 1: Data collection

The system receives data such as text, images, sounds, or numbers.

Step 2: Data preparation

The data is organized and checked for errors.

Step 3: Processing

The system uses an algorithm or an AI model to process the data.

Step 4: Producing results

The system gives an answer, makes a prediction, identifies an object, or recommends an action.

Step 5: Evaluation

The results are checked to determine whether they are correct and useful.

Example: An AI System for Learning

A student uses an educational application to practise Mathematics.

The application checks the student's answers and identifies topics where the student makes mistakes. It may then recommend additional exercises.

This can help the student improve.

However, the recommendations may not always be correct. The student and teacher should review the results.

1.7 Characteristics of Artificial Intelligence

AI systems may have the following characteristics.

1. Learning

Some AI systems learn patterns from examples and data.

Example: An email system learns to identify messages that may be spam.

2. Reasoning

Some AI systems use facts and rules to reach conclusions.

Example: A rule-based system may use symptoms and medical rules to suggest possible causes of an illness.

3. Problem-solving

AI can help find solutions to problems.

Example: A navigation application searches for a suitable route to a destination.

4. Pattern recognition

AI can identify patterns in data, images, sounds, and text.

Example: A system recognizes a face in a photograph.

5. Language processing

AI can process and generate human language.

Example: A chatbot answers questions written in English.

6. Prediction

AI can use available data to estimate what may happen in the future.

Example: A system analyzes past sales to estimate future demand.

Not every AI system has all these characteristics.

1.8 AI and Traditional Computer Programs

Traditional computer programs follow instructions and rules written by programmers.

Some AI systems also follow fixed rules. Other AI systems learn patterns from data.

For example, a traditional program can calculate a student's average mark using a formula.

An AI system can analyze past student records to estimate which students may need additional academic support.

The two systems perform different tasks, but both depend on computers and software.

1.9 Applications of Artificial Intelligence

AI is used in many areas of life.

1. Education

AI can explain topics, generate practice questions, translate learning materials, and recommend lessons.

2. Healthcare

AI can help health workers examine medical images and analyze information.

3. Agriculture

AI can help farmers identify crop diseases and monitor crop conditions.

4. Banking

AI can help banks identify unusual transactions and detect possible fraud.

5. Transportation

AI can help navigation systems recommend routes and estimate traffic conditions.

6. Communication

AI supports speech recognition, translation, spam filtering, and chatbots.

7. Business

AI can help businesses analyze sales, predict demand, and answer customer questions.

1.10 Advantages of Artificial Intelligence

The advantages of AI include:

1. It can process large amounts of data quickly. 2. It can perform repetitive tasks automatically. 3. It can help identify patterns in data. 4. It can support decision-making. 5. It can improve access to learning resources. 6. It can help people solve certain complex problems. 7. It can provide automated services at different times of the day.

1.11 Limitations of Artificial Intelligence

AI also has limitations.

1. Incorrect results: AI can provide wrong answers or make inaccurate predictions.

2. Dependence on data: Many AI systems need suitable data to work well.

3. Bias: AI may produce unfair results if its data or design contains bias.

4. Privacy risks: Personal information may be exposed if it is not protected.

5. Cost: Developing and maintaining some AI systems can be expensive.

6. Overdependence: Using AI for everything can reduce independent thinking and problem-solving practice.

7. Lack of human judgment: AI may not fully understand the real-life situation behind a problem.

1.12 Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence

AI should be used carefully and responsibly.

Students should:

1. Check important information provided by AI. 2. Avoid sharing passwords and private information with AI tools. 3. Use AI to support learning rather than replace personal effort. 4. Respect copyright and the work of other people. 5. Avoid using AI to cheat in examinations. 6. Ask teachers for guidance when necessary.

AI is a useful tool, but people remain responsible for how they use it.

1.13 Practical Activity

Activity 1: Identify AI Applications

Work in pairs.

Identify five digital applications that you or people around you use.

For each application:

1. State its name. 2. Explain what it does. 3. Indicate whether it uses AI, if you can determine this. 4. Explain how it helps users.

Discuss your answers with the class.

Activity 2: Solve a Real-Life Problem

A school wants to help students who have difficulties understanding some subjects.

The school has records of attendance, assignment marks, and examination results.

Answer the following questions:

1. What information can the school use? 2. How could AI help the teachers? 3. State two benefits of using AI in this situation. 4. Identify two possible risks. 5. Explain why teachers should check the results produced by AI.
